Tanzanite Gemstones
Tanzanite – Mother African’s Rare Gem
As recently as 1967, the first tanzanite was found by Maasai warriors in exotic East Africa. It has become one of the world's most desired gemstones and is greatly prized for its rarity and colour.
Tanzanites are named after their only known source, Tanzania. These magnificent stones occur only in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in the north of Tanzania. They are a rare variety of the mineral zoisite created by a geological phenomenon. Tanzanites are said to be a 1000 times rarer than diamonds
Tanzanite’s distinctive colour is unlike any other gemstone. Each kaleidoscopic stone displays a symphony of exquisite colours ranging from violet to royal blue. The most sought after of these rare stones are deep blue surrounded by a delicate hint of purple.
Tanzanites are cut into a variety of shapes including round, oval, cushion, emerald and trillion. Along with turquoise and zircon, it is the birthstone for December.
When designing a tanzanite piece, the jewellery designer must take into account the stone’s softness (Moh’s hardness rating of 6.5 to 7) and provide adequate protection in the creation. They are best set in white gold to show off their full power but the rest of the piece can be made in yellow or white gold. They are also fabulous with sparkling, white diamonds. Due to specific requirements of this stone, only have a highly-skilled jeweller clean, repair or alter a tanzanite piece.
In Mother Africa, the tanzanite has inspired the Maasai to weave mystical tales of blue lightning coming to earth. Those bold enough to wear this energising and intriguing stone; set themselves apart and exude confidence.
